At a cattle station in the upper reaches of the Herbert River, Neilly Group (NG) undertook design of porous rock check dams proposed by Terrain NRM at the spillway of an historical abandoned tailings dam which had been undergoing significant sheet erosion. The aim of the works was to reduce the amount of fine sediment that is being exported from the abandoned tailings dam, which eventually makes its way to the Great Barrier Reef.

The works were funded under the Australian Government’s Reef Trust IV funding programme. The photograph above shows the porous rock check dams during construction.
