Neilly Group (NG) were engaged by NQ Dry Tropics / Lower Burdekin Water, in conjunction with fisheries experts Tenchfisher, to design six rock ramp fishways on the Saltwater Creek system south of Home Hill, Queensland. The fishways were required to overcome fish barriers in the form of proposed automatic flood control gates that are to be retrofitted to existing culverts on the Saltwater Creek system as part of Lower Burdekin Water’s irrigation distribution system. 2D hydrodynamic flood modelling was undertaken to determine if the fishways would impact negatively on flood levels for a range of flood events. One of the fishways has been constructed and is in operation as shown in the photograph, with construction oversight provided by NG and Tenchfisher.
