REEF TRUST VII STREAMBANK EROSION DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
Neilly Group were commissioned by NQ Dry Tropics to design and then construct a pile field project located on the Burdekin River within the Burdekin Delta catchment management unit, under the Reef Trust VII program. The site is approximately 1.3km in length and is located upstream of the Bruce Highway bridge crossing of the Burdekin River between Ayr and Home Hill. The project involved the design and iterative 2D hydraulic modelling of bank battering works and timber pile field, to ensure that the pile field would be effective in a system as large as the Burdekin River, which has a channel width of approximately 1km. The resulting pile field was optimised to consist of 26 retards with a total of 988 timber piles. The bank battering and timber pile field works were constructed by Neilly Group and supported by a revegetation program and a 12-month revegetation maintenance program that were also executed by Neilly Group. The photographs shown below are of the site 12 months after completion, at the end of the revegetation maintenance program and approximately 8 months after the first wet season was experienced by the site.
